Assessments are an integral part of all training courses. ACHM uses the principles of competency-based training for all courses. This means that a student’s performance is assessed on their ability to perform the tasks to the required standard. In order to ensure the principles of validity are upheld a variety of learning styles and a range of assessment strategies are used. Students are advised at the commencement of each term when assessments are scheduled, and a student may put forward for consideration of any special needs they may have.
Assessment for each unit of competency will be through a combination of the following types of assessments:
Students are required to attend Simulation Based Assessments prior to professional experience placement. This will be held at the same place where the students are going for professional experience placement. During Simulation Based Assessments, students are required to attend 20 hours per week for 3 weeks. During this period, students will be assessed for skills and knowledge required for Professional experience. ACHM has a laboratory which simulates 2 bed aged care facility with 2 beds and other relevant equipment that are used in aged care facility. This laboratory is used by trainers/assessors to demonstrate the students how the aged care beds and other equipment look like and operate. Students can come and practice in the laboratory. The students are to book an appointment at ACHM office, a trainer will be made available for the session. A maximum of 4 students will be allowed to practice at any given time.

Attendance records will systematically be maintained for students. Students must present a medical certificate issued by a Legally Qualified Medical Practitioner, a sickness certificate issued by a pharmacy is not sufficient.
